Summary: I’m in the middle of playing Persona 3 Portable and I just finished Shinjiro’s Social Link and I got the scene after and I just fought the 10th and 11th Arcana Shadows and I’m just having a lot of feelings for this pairing right now and I needed to get this story out because I really love Shinji and I’m just so upset I love this pairing so much and I wish it didn’t end like this but it does it really fucking does just ugh, my heart.

It has some of the original dialogue from the game, but only a few spoken sentences. I added a lot more to this. If you ship Shinjiro and the MFC (main female character) then I hope you will really love this angst-ridden story.

Best read while listening to this song on repeat.

Get ready to cry.

Enjoy. (/goes to fucking sob in a corner as I watch the scene on my game)

Minako dealt the final blow on the Fortune Shadow, its existence disintegrating into black mist, and then nothing. She huffed out a breath, trying to ease her nerves with her and her friends’ victory against tonight’s Shadows. But she couldn’t. Something was off; her back was tense and straighter, the hair on the back of her neck bristled, her grip on her naginata was too tight. Something was throwing her instincts out of whack and it had started the moment Mitsuru voiced her concern about Shinjiro and Ken’s whereabouts.

She brought her weapon up, close against her, and gripped it with her free hand. She worried her lower lip and stared at the ground.

"Good job everyone! That was quick!" Fuuka’s voice floated to Minako’s ears, but the brunette barely heard her. The others chatted quietly with triumph as Minako took a few steps more, placing her closer to Akihiko. Over the last month, she and Shinjiro had gotten as close to each other as Shinjiro would let someone other than Akihiko get. She knew how kind-hearted he was under his rough exterior, how concerned he really was for other people. Minako truly did hold Shinjiro in a special place in her heart; she even confessed her love to him and, in his own way, he had returned her feelings.

Minako inched towards Akihiko, as he knew Shinjiro even better than she did. She leaned against her weapon’s sturdy pole, her forehead resting against the cool metal, and stared at the ground. Both she and her Sempai were quiet.

"Sempai…" she frowned, feeling her chest tighten for an unknown reason again. The silverette briefly glanced at her, but did not meet her eyes. His face was tight with worry as well.

I have a very bad feeling,' Minako mused mentally, 'and I don’t think it’s just the full moon…

Both of them were startled from his thoughts when Yukari called to them. They were going to head back to the dorm to continue their search for Shinjiro and Ken. Again, Minako trudged behind, holding her naginata close. She heard Akihiko’s deep voice mumble after a few moments.

"It’s October the 4th, huh…" He looked to the moon in thought.

"Yeah, aaand…?" Yukari’s voice drawled.

"You guys go on ahead, I’m gonna go look for them for a while longer," Akihiko stated and, before anyone could protest, he jogged off in an adjacent direction. A thick string pulled on Minako’s heart to follow after Akihiko and help search, but she stayed put. She was their leader; she had to take care of their team. Akihiko knew Shinjiro best, after all.

If anyone could find them, it would be him.

Minako’s heart positively dropped when Mitsuru explained the story of Ken’s mother. She had a terrible sinking feeling and she knew that they had to find Shinjiro and Ken immediately. She felt the adrenaline shoot through her veins when Fuuka determined their location and she was out the door even before Mitsuru. Yukari and Junpei called after Minako to slow down, but she only ran faster. Mitsuru was keeping up at her left flank and the only thing Minako could hear was her own ragged breathing. The pain of air cutting at her throat was almost a reason to slow down and catch her breath, but she continued on towards Natsumi Port Island. Her feet hit hard against the ground and her weapon occasionally smacked the pavement beneath the soles of their shoes.

Shinjiro…!’

They ran on for a minute longer, only a short distance away, when—

-Bang-

Minako stopped, dead in her tracks. Her heart felt like it stopped just as hard and her mind went blank. Yukari’s voice barely reached her, “Wh-What was that?”

Mitsuru pointed to a corner of a building.

"It came from over there!"

Junpei asked hesitantly, “Y-You don’t think—?”

Minako’s voice shuddered out in little above a whisper, “No…”

She lunged forward, trying to gain back the speed she lost when she heard the gunshot.

No…!

She heard footsteps race after her and, as they rounded the corner, they saw a member of Strega with a gun, pointing towards Shinjiro. Ken was shielded as another gunshot rang out.

Minako’s voice screeched from her throat,

No! Shinjiro!

Akihiko arrived just as they did, just in time to see what would be the second bullet to penetrate through Shinjiro’s chest causing him to cough violently, blood speckling the ground.

Shinji!

Minako made to run forward, but Junpei grabbed her arms and held her back.

Junpei! Let go! Let go of me! Please! Let go!” Minako couldn’t hold back the tears as she begged Junpei. Her voice was harsh with grief and it hurt so much to make a sound other than sobbing.

"You can’t go over there; he has a gun! What if he shoots you, too?"

"But— Shinjiro’s—!"

This was the feeling she’d had. This was what put her on edge all night. Something had been trying to warn her of this very event and she hadn’t figured it out in time. She recalled all of the things Shinjiro had talked with her about only a couple of nights ago. She had kept wondering why his words sounded like a will.

The Strega member, Takaya, sighed with irritation, “And now your comrades arrive. Is there any moment of joy they won’t intrude upon…? Perhaps another time, then…” and with that, Takaya disappeared into the shadows.

There was a nanosecond of silence before Minako took advantage of Junpei’s disorientation and she ripped out of his hands and ran towards Shinjiro as Akihiko sped towards him as well. Minako skid her knees as she slid to a halt, her skin scraped by the hard pavement of the ground as she collapsed to Shinjiro’s side.

"Shinji! Shinji, he, h-hang in there!" Akihiko’s voice cracked out.

Minako blinked furiously, trying to see through her tears as she placed her hands on Shinjiro’s chest lightly to she surveyed his wounds. His blood was warm under her hands, but his body was losing heat rapidly. She choked out a quiet sob,

"Sh-Shinji… ro…"

She’s briefly aware of Mitsuru standing above her,

"Shinjiro!"

The others whisper the same name with grief and Yukari’s voice drifts into tears behind her.

Shinjiro coughs with difficulty before calling, “Ken…”

Minako looks to the addressee, tears still spilling from her eyes, and she rests her hand on Shinjiro’s wrist unconsciously. She lets out another soft cry when she hears Shinjiro’s weak laugh.

"Heh… Why the long face?" he asks with an ironic smile.

"Isn’t this… what you wanted?"

Ken’s shaking on the ground as he looks down at Shinjiro, his child-like eyes filled with frustrated tears.

"It’s alright… Give yourself time… Let your anger be your strength… You’re still just a kid, Ken… You got your whole life ahead of ya… So don’t waste it…”

Ken lets out a sob.

"Make it your own… Okay?"

Ken’s voice is frantic, “B-But I… I…!”

Shinjiro turns his head to look up at Akihiko,

"…Aki. Take care of ‘im."

Akihiko grit his teeth, but nodded firmly, “…I will.”

Finally, Shinjiro’s head turns to look up at Minako, fresh tears escaping her eyes at the sight of the resolution in his own. The bastard smiles up at her.

"…Hey," He reaches his hand up to caress her cheek very gently and she brings both of her hands up to hold his, like if she doesn’t hold on, he’ll go.

"Don’t cry… Minako…" his thumb traces down her hairline and she leans into the touch, never taking her eyes off of his.

"I told you… I was no good for you…"

Another spasm rips through his lungs, and he gasps for breath.

Minako shakes her head, holding onto Shinjiro’s hand tighter, trying so desperately to keep him here, with them, with her.

"N-No, Shinjiro, please… I… I-I’m not ready for you to…" she cries audibly again and bends over, resting her forehead against Shinjiro’s and hugging his arm close. She’s overcome with a wave of grief and her body shakes as she tries to keep her crying as quiet as possible.

She hears a fragile chuckle in her ear and his thumb caresses her skin again fondly.

"You idiot…" he whispers to only her. His voice was one of endearment, but Minako could have sworn she could hear sadness in his voice, too, if she listened hard enough.

"The hospital… W-We need to get him to the hospital…" Fuuka stammered.

"Y-Yes, let’s waste no time…" she gasps with realization, something Akihiko and Minako knew from the moment they heard the gunshots,

"It’s the Dark Hour… until it ends, the doctors won’t be…!"

"No… then… is he not going to make it?" Yukari exclaimed.

Minako and Shinjiro were barely aware of the gang chattering frantically around them. Minako angled her head so she could look into Shinjiro’s eyes, still holding his hand as if it would help her from utterly shattering to pieces. Shinjiro’s eyes studied her quietly and blinked slowly. He seemed to debate for a moment and then smiled, brushing his nose against hers.

"I… love you, y’know…"

Minako couldn’t help but let out a breathy laugh and, for a moment, her tears were of joy at his uncharacteristic statement. She smiled and shook again as more tears came.

"And I love you…" she felt him tilt his head ever so slightly to press against her forehead.

"Yeah, just like that… Remember what I told you; Keep smiling… just like that. Make sure you’re happy… even after I’m gone… ‘kay?"

Minako flared angrily at the idea that he was suggesting, but didn’t say anything. She settled for staring at him stubbornly.

"I mean it, Minako," he tried to sound firm, but his voice came out exhausted at best.

"I… want you to be… happy. Promise me…"

Minako sniffed, trying to keep more tears from coming. She hesitated and then nodded once.

Promise.”

She nodded again, and reached a hand up to brush a stray hair back from his eyes,

"I promise, Shinjiro…"

He smiled again and let out a sigh, “Good girl…”

It was getting closer now, and they both knew; His time was almost up. They were blessed to even have this much time together before his end.

He mustered up energy enough to speak up to Akihiko,

"Hey, Aki… You’d better… take care of this one… You hear me?"

Akihiko took in the words and nodded firmly.

"… You got it."

He let out another sigh before pulling weakly at her hand, an attempt to bring her closer, and when she did, he repeated almost silently,

"I love you.”

"I love you,” Minako returned and she brushed their lips together briefly. They gazed deep into each other’s eyes, Shinjiro giving one last smile up at her. She smiled back at him sadly, but still so happy that she could be with him at a time like this. She comfortingly stroked his hand in small circles with her fingers.

"I’ll watch over you… ‘kay?" he promised warmly.

She nodded, still smiling. “…’kay.”

She continued her gentle ministrations, easing him into some form of comfort as his eyes closed.

"Sh-Shinji…" Akihiko whispered above them, screwing his eyes shut.

Ken’s cries echoed through the air just as the Dark Hour ended.
